Kitesurfing in Kalpitiya
Long windy summers and short breezy winters, Kalpitiya has 9 months in the year of great kiting conditions making it a mecca for kiters who flock here from around the globe. In the winter season (Dec-March) in the afternoon, you can kite on the lagoon right in front of the gym – perfect for squeezing in a couple of morning gym sessions and finishing off with a sunset kite.
With a few flat lagoons in the area, it is the perfect set up for beginners but still plenty of waves and downwinders around Puttalam, Kappalady and up to Mannar for the more advanced, adventurous kiters. During the peak season, an abundance of boats set off for the flat, clear waters of Vella Island where kiters can stay overnight in fisherman huts to catch that perfect sunset session before settling in by the bonfire with some chilled beers. Even though it is rising in popularity, you will still experience uncrowded sessions in this area.
There are a plethora of kite schools in the area although we highly recommend Kitesurfing Lanka who are located right next to the gym, plenty of the best equipment to rent and all their instructors are IKO Certified.
