Kayaking in Kalpitiya & Beyond

Slow things down and take a cruise through the hidden backwaters of Kappalady and Wilpattu National Park. You’ll see birds in abundance, local villagers fishing by hand, hear the sounds of wildlife all around you (and the odd call to prayer) as well as get a nice little core workout whilst you’re at it.

You have the option to do a half day paddle through the mangroves to a hidden beach in between the oldest Church and oldest Mosque in Sri Lanka, finishing up with a most-deserved sundowner. Or for the more adventurous, meander through the maze of jungle on the edge of Wilpattu National Park for a day or two, staying overnight in modest accommodation congratulating yourselves with a gin and tonic as the sun melts into the Kola Oya river. Prices start from around Rps. 3,000 and the kayaks are of the highest quality shipped over from Australia.

You can also hire kayaks from most hotels if you just fancy a paddle in the ocean. Prices and quality vary although they are normally around Rps. 1,500 for a couple of hours.

One of the highlights of the kayaking trips is being able to grab lunch and/or dinner at the Kite House Cafe in Kappalady. The food here is sensational and is an absolute must during your stay in Kalpitiya.
