Dolphin & Whale Watching

The seas surrounding Kalpitiya truly are alive and rich with marine life. In the winter season, from November to April, whilst the winds might be less strong for kitesurfing, schools of dolphins and whales flock to the area in abundance. The best viewing times are in the morning  so that leaves the afternoons to fit in a workout session. You can also combine with some scuba diving and snorkelling.

Most of the dolphins you’ll spot from the boat will be pods of Spinner Dolphins, sometimes reaching numbers into the 100s and 1000s, and for whales you’ll see plenty of humpbacks and potentially “super pods” (25+) of sperm whales between November and December, and then March and April. The Blue Whale, the largest mammal in the world, has been spotted from time to time, but these are a lot less common. Scientists have said that Blue Whales may now be year round residents in our seas. Quite the treat. Pods of Orcas (Killer Whales) have also been spotted off the Kalpitiya shores. One scientist had the rare opportunity to witness a pod of orcas attack a pod of sperm whales - guess they’re living up to their name!
